FAQ

Q. What's this open call all about?

A: Our gallery program is an extension of our mission to redefine the creative experience from start to finish. Our international open calls take place year round and are designed to identify and illuminate the world’s top emerging talent.

Since 2007, The Solo Show has allowed 3rd Ward to celebrate artists for their creativity, ambition and innovation - not their status or the saleability of their work. Our open calls accept work from all mediums and we encourage an interdisciplinary approach. 3rd Ward is a place for big ideas both in size & ingenuity! Selected artists become Solo Show Legends, each awarded with a $5,000 cash grant, an optional 3-month residency, a Solo Exhibition and NYC press. We also provide airfare to and from 3rd Ward so anyone can win no matter their location. During the Solo Show Residencies, artists have access to a private live/work studio, all facilities at both our Brooklyn locations and our community of professional artists & designers. We also do not take a percentage of any work sold through our Solo Shows.

Q: What is the Grand Prize Package?

A: Our top selected artist will win a $5,000 cash grant, a solo exhibition in 3rd Ward's gallery, complete with a massive opening reception, an optional 3-month residency at 3rd Ward including live/work studio & full facility access (photo studios, wood & metal shop, media lab, classes), airfare & shipping to and from 3rd Ward for non-NYC residents, a 2-page spread in 3rd Ward's Quarterly Magazine and NYC wide exposure.

The Grand Prize is decided by our judging panel and is not affected by your popular vote tally.  The judges will be seeing your work on it's own and only the quality of your work will be considered.

Q: Do I have to be a 3rd Ward member if I want to submit to the Open Call?

A. No! 3rd Ward Membership is not required. This Open Call is open to artists all over the world.

Q: What if I have my own studio and don't need the 3-month residency? OR What if I can only use the residency for 2-months?

A. No Problem! The Residency Program was developed to help Solo Show Artists create work, not to pin them down with space or tools they don't need. The residency is not mandatory and we are flexible about the timeline.
